FON
FON is a Global Community of people who share WiFi. Share your WiFi broadband
access at home/work and enjoy WiFi all over the world!
To become a Fonero, all you need to do is register with FON on their website,
have broadband connection, and download the FON Software onto your WiFi router.
It's that simple. Just share your connection and the rest of the Community shares
back with you. Join FON and enjoy connecting from anywhere within the WiFi World.
To start sharing, set up your access point where you can receive the most coverage, generally close to the window or outside your home. The rest of the Community will be thankful.
The Community
If you'd like to join the FON Community, register with them at
www.fon.com.
You can select the user profile that most suits you. FON is now working in a
Beta phase and is only available for Linus. A Linus is any user who shares his/her
WiFi in exchange for free access throughout the Community wherever there is
coverage. In the future, FON will also be available for Bills. Instead of roaming
for free, Bills are users who prefer to keep a percentage of the fees that FON
charges to Aliens. And Aliens are those who pay to connect.
The Software
If you have broadband connection and a WiFi router that is already FON Software
compatible, then visit our download area. Follow the instructions and in a few
minutes your WiFi router will become a FON access point or FON "Hotspot".
The Router
FON are working hard so that their Software is compatible with the makes and models of the most common WiFi routers. Currently, FON works on Linksys WRT54G/GS/GL versions 1x to 4x. If you happen to have a different make or model, you can purchase a FON Ready, Plug & Play router from their website with the Software already installed. You can also get a FON compatible router from Fearn Web Design and then download the Software on your own.
Sharing
Once your router has been installed with the FON Software, it will detect the
FON wireless signal. Select it and follow the instructions on the captive portal
that will appear when you register your access point. The process is easy and
you can follow step by step the instructions in the download section. This way
the entire Community will be able to locate your WiFi Hotspot on the map, and
you'll be able to connect freely throughout the FON Community.
Coverage
Once you're a Fonero, you can begin connecting to all of the access points or
Hotspots that appear on the FON coverage maps. You can easily find the geographic
location of the closest FON Hotspots to where you wish to connect.
Security
If you have registered your WiFi in the FON Community, you will be protected
through your local password which you can change whenever you choose. You
will share your WiFi connection with registered Foneros from around the world.
Unlike the open WiFi networks that are not password protected, all Foneros
who connect through your WiFi are registered and identifiable.
