Retrieving& understanding your statistics through cPanel
Go to your hosting control panel. - Visit your hosting account Control Panel by going to http://yournewdomain.com/cpanel. [Make sure you replace the 'yournewdomain.com' with your actual domain name.] - Enter your username and password.
Open
the statistics report. - On the Cpanel main screen, click the 'Web/FTP Stats'
button [This is found on the fourth row] Next choose the statistics package
which most suits your needs, we recommend 'awstats'. After clicking the option,
the different statistics will now be displayed.
Note: If you are hosting
multiple URL's on one hosting package you may need to look at your 'Subdomain
Stats' to find the stats for the relevant site. These are also found on the
4th row and can be accessed in a similar manner.
Read
the statistics. - The statistics will show the number of visits by country,
month, day and hour, as well as referrers or URL's that directed a user to your
website. You can also check the pages viewed by each user, each user's operating
systems and browsers, their searches in your website, traffic by domain and
traffic by file among others. Also worth examining may be entry/exit pages,
total number of requests, traffic by domain & traffic by file.
Analyze
the results. - WE recommend that you print out the report and review it
on a regular basis. You can use the report to determine which part of your website
is most popular and what needs to be improved or modified to increase your website
popularity.
Notes. - In order to understand your website's statistics, you must first know the basic terms used in the statistics:
- 'Files' shows the total requests given to the server from a certain period.
- 'Sites' displays the total unique IP addresses or hostname's that visited
the website. Exercise caution when using the 'Site' statistic to determine
the number of 'Unique' visitors to your website. Many visitors will have
a dynamic IP Address and may have visited your site from more than one IP
address.
- 'Pages' shows the URL of the page each user has visited
- 'Kbytes' displays the total amount of data that is being transferred from
the server to the user's computer.
